Scotica Spring 2023 Update

March 1, 2023

Boy, do we have a lot to talk about this month!

We’ve had a frosty and bright few days here at Scotica HQ. The snowdrops and crocuses are coming out in force, alleviating at last the long dullness of winter with some speckled colour. The bees are conducting their first flights of the year, rediscovering the world around them and picking out what meagre early forage there is. But winter is far from past for the Scotica team…

The Real Heroes of Telemark

I’m writing this on Thursday, February 23rd, from a cosy office with a stove crackling in the background. But by the time this update goes live, the Scotica team will be in the middle of the Hardangervidda, Europe’s highest plateau, shooting a new documentary piece we can’t wait to share more information about in the coming months. Suffice it to say, a team of 12 of us will be recreating one of the 20th century’s most famous and daring special operations missions through one of the planet’s greatest temperate wildernesses. Watch this space!

New environmental stories with Forest Carbon

Over the past couple of months, we’ve been working closely with environmental organisation Forest Carbon to create a series of short documentaries showing how conservation and carbon capture are making a real difference to the lives of individuals up and down the UK. From the common grazings of South Wales where a local tree plant has grown into something truly special, to the lofty moors in the far north of Scotland where a community-owned estate is rebuilding the slopes one of the area’s most iconic mountains, this series will show how individuals have the power to enact huge and lasting change.

Even Wilder Seas!

If you’ve been following our social pages or our blog over the past six months, you’ll know we’ve been working closely with Talisker whisky to create a series of films championing their work with marine conservation organisation Parley. We’re now extremely excited to be able to show off the culmination of all this work – a series of adverts for Talisker’s new limited-edition whisky ‘Wilder Seas’. Submerge yourselves with us into the depths of the Scottish kelp forests, and discover what wild really tastes like.

‘Small Country’, free for all to see

Our last major item, in case you missed this over the past few weeks, we’re delighted to be able to bring our first documentary, released in 2021, ‘Small Country’, to the web for all to watch free of charge for the first time. If you haven’t seen the film yet, take half an hour, grab a brew, comfy down and get ready to transport yourself to the fringes of the northwest Highlands and the people who make the landscape here so special.

3 years of Scotica

One more thing before I sign off – last Sunday (February 19th) marked the 3rd anniversary of the very first Scotica shoot, where we packed up cameras, donned crampons and headed up into the mountains with none other than the fantastic folks at OceanVertical. It was a trial by fire, with high winds and whiteout conditions – but we think the final product was worth it.

Here’s to the next 3.
